Relationship Building

Understanding the importance that Māori place on relationships and why organisations should seek to apply these are the cornerstone of this module. In te ao Māori this concept is referred to as whanaungatanga, or relationship building, and it is an essential concept for Māori that encompasses the value and significance of family connections, kinship, and interconnectedness. For Māori, whanaungatanga holds deep cultural and social importance, emphasising the building and nurturing of meaningful relationships.

Businesses in Aotearoa New Zealand have a unique opportunity to engage with Māori entities and foster positive connections by understanding and embracing whanaungatanga. By learning about this concept and applying it to their interactions, organisations can demonstrate cultural respect, build authentic relationships and create inclusive environments that resonate with Māori employees, customers, and all other stakeholders.

Central to relationship building are Māori leaders who are servants of their communities, with a constant eye on what is best for the group they have been chosen to serve. We explore their unique and valuable relational perspective in their desire to build meaningful relationships. Having this perspective around a board and/or executive team enhances decision-making and builds the cultural maturity of an organisation.
