Te Kākano

‘Te Kākano’ is an introductory cultural competency and development programme aimed at creating a safe space for participants to engage with Te Ao Māori / The Māori World-View.

The term ‘Te Kākano’ translates to ‘The Seed’ and this programme symbolises the planting of a seed of learning, supporting participants growth and confidence to implement Te Ao Māori learnings into the workplace.

The programme was designed specifically for organisations large and small, that are committed to creating a meaningful culture shift through the integration of Te Ao Māori perspectives and practices into the way their organisation operates. We designed ‘Te Kākano’ with all levels of the organisation in mind, to ensure all staff felt supported to authentically engage and uplift their own cultural confidence and further enhance workplace cultural capability.

We deliver the programme in-house where we come into your organisation, marae-based or hybrid (online). The programme spans across six two-hour sessions, however, the length of time for each session can be adapted to suit your organisation.

Aims and outcomes of Te Kākano

  • Boost cultural confidence and workplace kotahitanga (unity of purpose) through developing workplace cultural capability
  • Enhance everyday workplace practices
  • Supports participants to think deeper and explore what integration into their lives looks like
  • Introductory understanding of te reo Māori / tikanga Māori and traditional Māori practices so participants feel more confident in various settings and situations

Te Kākano comprises of six sessions that cover the following topics:

    • Whakawhanaungatanga | Building relationships
    • Introduction to pepeha
    • Te ao Māori | The Māori world-view
    • Core Māori values
    • Te reo Māori | The Māori language
    • “Titiro whakamuri, kōkiri whakamua” – Bringing the knowledge participants have gained into the future to enhance their interaction with Māori & Māori Communities

Note: This course does not cover Te Tiriti o Waitangi / The Treaty of Waitangi as we have a separate four- hour wānanga which covers this topic. We suggest undertaking the Cultural Competency & Development Programme (‘Te Kākano’) & Te Tiriti o Waitangi wānanga together or undertaking the Te Tiriti o Waitangi wānanga prior to commencing ‘Te Kākano’.
