We are a strategic Māori development consultancy that specialises in a wide range of Kaupapa Māori advisory support services.
Our purpose is to significantly contribute to Māori development for the benefit of Māori and all other communities of Aotearoa New Zealand.
Our clients include Iwi entities, Central and Local Government and other Māori and private sector organisations looking to further strengthen their engagement with the Māori economy in a productive and mutually beneficial manner.
What is the Māori Economy?
In 2003 Te Puni Kōkiri (The Ministry of Māori Development) commissioned the New Zealand Institute of Economic Research (NZIER) to undertake a comprehensive analytical stocktake of the ‘Māori economy’. The NZIER report subsequently defined the Māori economy as ‘all those businesses and transactions where Māoriness matters. It includes the activities based on collectively-owned Māori assets, the businesses of the self-employed who identify as Māori, commercial transactions involving Māori culture, services oriented to specific Māori needs, as well as the housing owned by Māori’.
It was originally calculated to be worth $9.4 billion in 2001, rising to $16.5 billion by 2006, $36.9 billion in 2010, $50 billion in 2018 and is now estimated to be valued in excess of $68.6 billion (BERL analysis).

With business leadership experience spanning 25 years, he is a qualified accountant by profession who has led two of the most high-profile Māori organisations over a 14 year period – Māori Television and Te Wānanga o Aotearoa.
Dr Jim Mather also holds a PhD in Māori economic development and in 2018 established Mather Solutions Limited.
