Te Tiriti o Waitangi and The Treaty of Waitangi established the constitutional relationship between Māori and the crown and is relevant to all of us in New Zealand. Our workshop, provides the opportunity for attendees to advance their knowledge and education on this very important and relevant topic in a safe and engaging environment.

This workshop will explore the historical and contemporary context of Te Tiriti/ The Treaty, involving critical discussion and reflection about its application.

The purpose of this workshop is to support communities to understand the living relationship of Te Tiriti / The Treaty in Aotearoa New Zealand. This workshop is designed to enhance your professional learning and development while helping you understand how to apply the Te Tiriti / The Treaty in your life.

Our workshop facilitator

Our expert facilitator, Moana Tuwhare, will lead the session. Moana has dedicated over twenty years in legal practice working with whānau Māori, hapū, iwi, trusts and organisations in the Waitangi Tribunal, Māori Land Court and general courts. She previously served as the coordinating counsel for the Te Paparahi o Te Raki Waitangi (Northland) Waitangi Tribunal Stage 1 Inquiry, which produced the key findings on the meaning and effect of He Whakaputanga and Te Tiriti as of 1840.

Moana continues to stay informed about Treaty-based initiatives and developments. With her exceptional communication skills and extensive knowledge of Te Tiriti, she creates a safe environment for questions, challenges and debates. For more information on Moana’s background click here.

Who are we?

We are Mather Solutions Māori development consultancy. We specialise in Te Tiriti o Waitangi wānanga, strategy workshops, leadership development, governance support services. This workshop will be led by Moana Tuwhare.

What does the workshop offer?
This workshop is different to other workshops offered and led by Moana Tuwhare. It is focused on answering the following questions:

  • Why did Māori sign the Te Tiriti / The Treaty?
  • Who signed the Te Tiriti / The Treaty?
  • Is Te Tiriti o Waitangi and The Treaty of Waitangi the same document?
  • What does the Te Tiriti / The Treaty actually say and mean?
  • What difference has the Te Tiriti / The Treaty made and how is it still relevant today?
  • What does the Waitangi Tribunal do?
  • How does the Te Tiriti / The Treaty apply to me?

Will there be another workshop?
At this point, this is the only workshop planned, however there is potential for more in the future.
